Antivirus performance comparison

All users of computers should install a third party anti-virus tool. These tools help to identify and eliminate malware from a PC. They can also block malicious great site websites that may try to hijack or corrupt user data. However they can also significantly slow down a computer’s speed and performance when they run an analysis or updating their database with infected files. This article compares the performance of various antivirus programs by testing the extent to which they can slow down a computer.

The independent AV Comparatives lab carries out numerous separate tests to test security software products. The tests test security in real-world situations such as detection of infected files (classical testing), and performance. The AV-Comparatives award Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards in accordance with the results of each type of test.

This particular test was inspired by a real-life scenario for a customer. Many customers use PowerShell scripts that could take hours or days to complete. These complex scripts are run on high-performance equipment, therefore we wanted to see how the antivirus scanner impacted this. We also wanted to know how the software utilized resources on each machine.

Avira Prime performed well in AV Comparatives tests. It provided the 99% of protection against Mac malware, PUAs and Windows Malware. It requires a subscription to gain access to all features, and its advertising messages are irritating.
